10 Years Since 9-11 -- Our Day in New York City!
What a wonderful trip to New York City!
Yes, our economy is bad, and times are painful for most. But, for the first time since the terrible event called “9-11”, I was able to to visit New York City with my 10 year old son, 12 year old daughter, and wife who has maybe been to new York once in her life. And as painful as things are in our economy, NOTHING is as painful as a trip to Ground Zero!” Here is my story, and what life lessons I’ve learned on this trip.
Most who know me, (or have been following me), know that I am a foreclosure/short sale Real Estate Agent that works mostly with people that are losing their homes for one reason or another. I’ve chosen this path in my business because I believe that everyone deserves another chance. Most people simply wanted a part of the American dream to own their own home…so went for it. Quite frankly there was nothing wrong with what they did. They gave it their best shot! For some it worked, for others…well, not so good. And, for those where it’s ending “not so good”, their situations were mostly out of the their own control. Loss of job, laid off, business shut down, etc. This is when I step in to assist and consult to begin the process of removing the housing pain. What does any of this have to do with New York and 9-11? Let me explain…
What I’ve learned is that what I do by helping people in real estate is special to my clients. It’s what I do, and don’t even think about it…I just do it! In my eyes, it’s what should be expected (to help another person when and where I can). How can I not? It’s how I was raised! I believe that every American when faced with the challenge of someone else's hardship will in-fact step up to the plate and be counted. This was proven to me yesterday as I stood at Ground Zero and reviewed the pictures of people helping people in times that I would consider the “hardest” in most of our lives. These were not people losing their “homes”, but losing their lives; losing their husbands, wives, children, grandchildren, grandparents and friends; these HEROS who never met the people in need, stood in the front line without even thinking about it to put their own lives on the line. It was amazing!
Even as we approach 10 years later since 9-11, I stood at the base of the what used to be the most incredible buildings in the world, and with 100’s of other people walking around, yet you could hear a pin drop. It was so quiet. Almost to quiet. I guess the phrase; “We Will Never Forget”, is so true. People ARE NOT forgetting! New candles are lit every day, fresh flowers are delivered daily, and people walking around have the look of not only “rage and sorrow”, but true concern and caring for one another! For the first time in NYC (and I’ve been there quite a bit prior to 9-11-2001), people ARE helping people. A strange gentlemen (with a smile on his face) held the door for me, my wife, and kids as we entered the building. A man on the corner called a cab for us when he saw we needed one. The waiter at the restaurant sat down with me and my family to tell us his 9-11 story. HOLY CRAP, was this New York City, or was I warped into a different dimension. For the first time, walking around the streets of NY until late into the evening, (and maybe being just a little naive), I had no fear, and felt safe for me and my family! On our ride home, my wife confided in me that she felt the same way. People in NY have changed FOREVER!
What I do in my “Helping People” real estate business may not compare to the men and woman who gave everything to help the people inside the Twin Towers. But, it does mean something to the people I help in their own bad situation. Although not as grave, the disparity of lose, and the need for assistance is still there. What you think is not important, or even insignificant to you, could be very important to someone else that you’re helping. It does not take charging into a burning building to change someone's life, it sometimes comes in the simplest form of assistance to one another. So I take the “We Will Never Forget” statement and change it to my own, “We Should Never Forget”, that helping someone today could change their life for the better!
